Home Scenery: A Unique Blend of Japanese and Industrial Style

Creating a Theatrical Living Space

The concept of Home Scenery is to recreate a residential space that reflects the owner's personal preferences. Designed by Chong Ping Chiu, this residential interior design showcases a unique blend of Japanese and industrial styles, resulting in a one-of-a-kind living experience.

What sets Home Scenery apart is its incorporation of theatrical elements. Inspired by the owner's background in the film industry, the design adds a touch of drama by inserting a stage within the common space of the flat. This stage serves as a domestic living area, featuring a lighter color scheme and soft timber finish to contrast with the monotone backdrop of the dining and working areas. This contrast enhances the visual perception of space, creating a unique atmosphere for the inhabitants.

One of the key features of Home Scenery is the built-in sofa structure in the living room area, which serves as a framing gesture for the surrounding scenery. The soft timber expands from the base to the ceiling, creating a focal point that captures attention. Flexibility is also a crucial aspect of smart living design, and Home Scenery achieves this through the use of tatami flooring in the living area. This versatile flooring can be a quiet corner for meditation or a space to host more visitors when needed.

The design of Home Scenery also prioritizes functionality in a compact living space. A well-planned storage system is crucial for everyday life, and this design incorporates invisible cabinet units to maintain an elegant appearance. Square units under the tatami flooring, rectangular units under and behind the sofa, and a pantry for filming equipment are just a few examples of the various tailor-made carpentry solutions that maximize the use of space.

Home Scenery was realized using a combination of wood veneer, dark mirror, plywood, steel frame, cement paints, laminate flooring, tatami flooring, diatomaceous earth paints, and low formaldehyde, non-toxic materials. These choices not only contribute to the aesthetics of the design but also create a healthier environment for the inhabitants.

This compact space design, located in Taipei, Taiwan, is a testament to the growing need for smart living solutions in urban areas. The design takes into account the shrinking family structure and limited budgets, offering a practical and efficient solution for city dwellers. By prioritizing functionality without compromising on aesthetics, Home Scenery sets a new standard for compact living.

Home Scenery was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit outstanding creativity and resourcefulness, incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology. With its unique blend of Japanese and industrial styles, Home Scenery contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.
